I Can Get On!

We are managing ‘I Can Get On!’ on behalf of Manchester Deaf Centre.

‘I Can Get On!’ builds on the work we did with deaf young people for the ‘Get On!’ project in 2021. Aimed at 17-24 year olds across 3 themes:

  • Believe in You! – building confidence and life skills
  • Have a Go! – explore possible career paths
  • Creative Competition – build employability skills.

The young people have taken part in one to one support sessions and a Wellbeing Day promoting mental and physical wellbeing. They’ve been on a trip to the theatre to see ‘Stan’, a play about friendship between deaf and hearing children (kindly supported by Art with Heart). In April they took part in a Creative Workshop (supported by Young Manchester) producing the ‘Quiet’ exhibit which promotes deaf culture, and hope to show this at The People’s History Museum in late 2022.

Pure Innovations delivered a Travel Confidence Workshop on 1st June which was followed by a Jubilee Party. Planning for lots more activities is underway.

The Community & Heritage CIC are enhancing the project by introducing additional offers including a ‘Young Leadership’ programme – helping the young people develop their communication, decision making and leadership skills.

‘I Can’ Youth Club is providing fun creative activities for deaf/hard of hearing/CODA young people aged 11-16 once a month. It’s so popular all the places are currently full but if you or your child are interested in taking part you can join the waiting list by emailing info@communityheritage.co

Thanks to We Love Manchester Charity for their support which is allowing us to offer a wider range of activities to the young people.
